The university was established in 1959 by the South African apartheid government as a university for colored people only.

The Human Resources (HR) Department supports and facilitates the people framework of the University in achieving its goals as put forward in the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP).

A key goal of the department is to attract, retain and develop talent, which will enable the University to execute its core mandate.
