Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

A lecturer at the School of Philosophy must contribute to the subject group’s undergraduate teaching & learning, supervision, research within the focus area, administration, and community engagement within the Faculty of Humanities & NWU strategic aims.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Teaching and learning:

  • Undergraduate teaching.
  • Teaching and developing of Understanding the World modules and philosophy modules in various philosophy traditions (e.g., Continental and African).
  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, online teaching, and other teaching sessions.
  • Initiation and development of subject material.

2.       Research:

  • Further own qualifications in philosophy.
  • Publish peer-reviewed, accredited journal articles in high-impact disciplinary journals.
  • Publish monographs and book chapters in books with reputable academic publishers.
  • Submit funding applications to stimulate and fund research initiatives.
  • Present research in academic spaces such as conferences and workshops.

3.       Community engagement:

  • Involvement in professional associations.
  • Involvement in community engagement projects.

4.       Administration:

  • Undertake academic administration on the program and module level and on the school, faculty, and institutional level.
  • Consultation with students.

Minimum requirements

  • An honors degree in philosophy or related discipline (NQF level 8).
  • A minimum of 1 year of lecturing experience in a higher education environment.

RECOMMENDATIONS/ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  • A master’s degree in philosophy (NQF level 9).
  • Membership with national and international professional philosophy associations and societies.
  • Applicants should show evidence of independence and initiative in research.

Key functional/technical components:

  • Knowledge of diverse philosophical ideas and practices.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
  • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g., whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), email, and the internet.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish peer-reviewed, accredited academic research, as well as to present findings at conferences, in the discipline of philosophy.
  • Ability to administer modules involving large numbers of students.

  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group.
  • Effective time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills, good interpersonal relations, and a client-service orientation.
  • Good planning and organizing skills, as well as good report-writing skills.
  • A high level of professional and ethical conduct.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
