Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
This internship position will prepare an individual for a wide variety of possible scenarios within a research environment where a transdisciplinary approach is taken towards project planning, data gathering, dissemination, and development of community-integrated interventions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research and Project management
- Planning, management, coordination, and reporting of research programs, including learning about project management and use of suitable software.
Understanding project terms of reference (ToR) and the writing of the research proposal, including ethics and budget
- Liaison with clients and understanding the deliverables of the project: Compiling a research proposal that meets the technical and ethical specifications required of the TOR. Compiling a budget with timelines and deliverables.
Literature review
- Desktop review of relevant literature.
Data gathering (adapt and develop data gathering tools, undertake pilot study and field work).
- Methods used to undertake study, including sampling strategy, adopt and design survey questions, develop interview protocols, focus group discussion questions, etc. Testing tools, data collection strategy, and conducting interviews facilitate focus group discussions and surveys.
Data analysis and interpretation of results
- Data preparation and coding (use software to capture qualitative and quantitative data). Data analysis.
Dissemination of results
- Compiling reports, presentation of results, and findings.
- Submission of papers for publications or presentation of papers at a conference.
Implementation, M&E and marketing of interventions
- Implementation, coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of existing and emerging interventions (such as LIFEPLAN).
- Assistance in marketing of intervention programs.
Minimum requirements
- An honors degree in health sciences, social and development studies, or related fields.
- Proof of registration for a master’s degree in health sciences, social and development studies, or related fields.
- A valid driver’s license.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- A minimum of one (1) year experience in project management.
- A minimum of one (1) year exposure to research and intervention activities, preferably in the field community engagement.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENTS:
- Computer literate.
- Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.
- Ability to work autonomously in a group or as an individual.
- Ability to use eMedia for the purpose of communication.
- Workshop presentations and research.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENTS:
- Excellent time management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Ability to adjust to various settings and adjust behavior accordingly.
- Friendly and open-minded personality to be able to approach different types of stakeholders and establish networks.
